What is an Implant Center?

An implant center is a group of like minded, well trained dentists who strive to achieve the best care of their patients through careful treatment planning, the use of the most modern techniques and the coordination of their specialties.

High Desert Oral Surgery & Implant Center offers the combination of Dr. Harris's surgical practice for the placement of the implants, followed by the excellent esthetic restoration of those implants by one of many diplomats to the center.

"At High Desert Oral Surgery & Implant Center we consider preservation of existing bone for implant therapy when evaluating a tooth for restoration. If we find that we will likely have greater long term success with and implant over tradition endodontic and crown/bridge, we are quick to offer that option to our patients." Dr. Harris

What is a dental implant?

Dental Implant
Simplified... A dental implant is a titanium screw which is surgically inserted into the bone of your upper or lower jaw using special techniques. This implant is then covered and allowed to heal and "Osseointegration". Once the implant is stable (Immediate to 6 months of healing), the implant is surgically exposed and a prosthetic tooth or teeth is fabricated to attach to that implant.

Where can you place implants?

Actually, you can place titanium implants into just about any part of the body as long as there is sufficient bone to keep them stable. This type of device has been used for many years in orthopedic surgery. Implants are regularly used for:

  • Single tooth replacement
  • Fixed bridges up to an entire arch of teeth
  • Stabilization of full or partial dentures

Can I receive IV sedation for my implant?

Absolutely, implant surgery is invasive enough that the implant center recommends some form of IV sedation during implant placement.

Can implants fail?

Yes. Implants have an 85 - 99% success rate depending on implant location, bone type and many other factors. The doctors at High Desert Implant Center can have implants fail to osseointegration without cause. Dr. Harris will discuss these risks at length with you during your free consult visit.

How much do implants cost?

While implants do tend to be slightly more expensive that traditional crown and bridge, the price difference per unit / tooth is getting smaller. Prices for implants vary based on location and the patients needs. Please make an appointment for a free implant consult with Dr. Harris as soon as possible.

How long do implants take?

Possibly the only down side to implants revolves around the time required for osseointegration of the implant. There are situations were implants are sufficiently stable on placement to allow immediate loading of the implant with a temporary crown. However, more often than not, the implant will require 4-6 months of healing before the implant will be stable enough to have a crown attached.

What is Bone Grafting?

During you implant consult, Dr. Harris will evaluate the bone in you upper and lower jaws. Should you need supplemental bone grafting to ensure your implants success, Dr. Harris offers a variety of bone grafting options. Many can be done at the Implant Center. Dr. Harris offers autologous platelet concentrate for all of his bone grafts.

Do I need bone grafting or a sinus lift?

When placing a dental implant into the top jaw, Dr. Harris may discover that there is not enough thickness of bone to support a stable implant. If that is the case, a bone graft may be required. During your free implant consult, Dr. Harris will evaluate you needs and discuss the risks, benefits and alternatives for your care.
